Horton Hears a Who

I took Denali and my sister Ruth to see Horton Hears a Who today. I liked it and thought it was pretty close to the feel of the book and true to Dr. Seuss.

On the other hand it was way too scary for Denali (3) and probably Emlyn (5). I wish that children's movies didn't have to be so scary. I think Finding Nemo is too scary as well as a lot of other Disney movies.

Some day my kids will be old enough for these movies, but it's just not yet.

You're right... nearly every kids movie I've seen has scary parts. The girls started to get interested in watching The Little Mermaid this week (we've been listening to the cd in the car) but still want me to hold them whenever Ursula is on screen (especially at the end when she's HUGE and laughing maniacally as she tries to kill Ariel and Prince Eric). It's like the people who make the movies don't have kids or something.

That's disappointing - I was hoping it would be a good movie.

To Alyson above - if you don't like the Disney version of TLM - don't watch the original one closer to Hans Christian Anderson's version. That was the 1st one I saw and it broke my heart.

I took Ruth to see this tonight and we both really liked it. We both thought it was much less scary than some of the other kid movies we've seen in the past. The best non-scary kid's movie is Ratatoulillie, which we just bought on DVD.

I LOVE The Little Mermaid (and most Disney movies) but for my 3-year-old and 2-year-old, Ursula (and Scar, and the leopard in Tarzan, and Shere Khan, etc., etc.) is still a little scary. Of course, we watched The Little Mermaid about 5 times this week, so maybe they are getting over it. :) Oh, and about Hans Christian Anderson... I checked out a few of his fairy tales (short versions) like Thumbelina and Hansel and Gretel for my girls a few months ago and they are NOT nice fairy tales!!!

Yeah, a lot of those cartoons are way too scarey. And their jokes are too entirely adult sometimes. I did not find Shrek funny at all. I'll be waiting a long time to show Em movies like that. Though she does like Nemo. I think just cause there's fish in it.
